Google simplifies Pixel Watch 4 repairs and cuts back on annoying Chrome alerts

Google has put a lot of thought into making its latest gadgets easier to fix and its browser less cluttered with pop-up messages. On the hardware side, the new Pixel Watch 4 stands out for how straightforward it is to take apart and repair, thanks to smart design choices that prioritize accessibility. Experts at iFixit recently broke it down step by step, proving just how user-friendly the process really is.

To get started, you’ll only need a handful of basic tools: three different sizes of screwdriver bits (1IP, 2IP, and 5IP), along with a spudger and some tweezers. The first move is to take off the watch bands, which reveals a hidden screw beneath each one. Right under that sits a small O-ring that keeps water out, and there’s a neat hinge setup that locks the back cover tight once you tighten the screw.

From there, you can gently lift away the glass over the sensors on the back—it’s still linked to the watch by a flexible connector, but you don’t even need to unplug it to loosen the four screws holding the vibration motor and battery in place. The battery itself now sits snugly inside a metal shell, a step up from the fabric pouch used before.

Switching to the front, popping off the screen takes just a couple more screws to free the cable holder, followed by four others to release the display. It seals with yet another O-ring in a way that echoes old-school mechanical watches, without any sticky glue to fight through. That’s all for parts you can swap out using official replacements.

If you ever need to dig deeper, the main circuit board comes out with more screws, and the whole inside has been reworked from last year’s model to make these steps smoother. While spare parts aren’t listed on iFixit’s site just yet, Google has shared detailed repair guides for both the 41mm and 45mm versions. iFixit has put together its own step-by-step instructions, too, giving the watch a strong provisional score of 9 out of 10 for how repairable it is.

For hands-on help, folks in the US, Mexico, and India can drop by a store for walk-in fixes, while everyone else can mail in their device. Google has even dropped repair manuals for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Pixel Buds 2a to keep the momentum going.

Shifting gears to software, Google is tackling the flood of unwanted notifications in Chrome, available on both Android phones and computers. The browser will now quietly turn off alerts from websites that you rarely check but bombard you with messages anyway. This targets sites with barely any user activity yet a ton of pushy notices.

It’s an extension of the existing Safety Check tool, which already strips away access to your camera or location from pages you’ve ignored for a while. When Chrome makes the switch, it’ll pop up a quick note saying it’s unsubscribed you from those notifications. You can head to Settings > Safety Check to see the list of affected sites and turn them back on if you like.

Or, just swing by the site next time and give the green light for alerts again. This won’t touch notifications from web apps you’ve added to your home screen, and there’s an option to switch off the automatic blocking altogether if it’s not your thing.

In tests, this tweak led to a big drop in notification clutter without much impact on how often people actually tap on them. Sites that send fewer messages tend to get more attention, and overall, fewer than 1% of these alerts ever get a response from users anyway.

Samsung’s new three-way Folding phone faces real-world toughness tests

By the time they hit roughly 145,000 folds, the hinges lost their “springiness,” making it hard for the phone to stay flat or close properly. While the screen itself kept working, the mechanical parts were clearly wearing out.

Beyond the folding tests, the phone also faced a “bend test” where it was forced in the wrong direction. Unfortunately, the TriFold didn’t survive this as well as previous models; the frame snapped and the screen pixels went dark with a reasonable amount of force. It seems that having more hinges and a thinner body makes the device more vulnerable to physical accidents.

Business-wise, Samsung isn’t too worried about these early hiccups or even the fact that they aren’t making much money on the TriFold right now. They view it as a “statement piece”—a way to show the world they can build technology that others can’t. The phone is only being sold in very small numbers, which helps keep it exclusive.

However, the company is feeling some pressure regarding its next big standard release, the Galaxy S26. With the costs of parts like processors and cameras going up, Samsung is looking for ways to keep prices fair for customers without losing money. While the TriFold is a cool look into the future, the success of their upcoming regular flagship phones is what really keeps the company steady.
