Google will let you set up Android work profile on unmanaged devices

Google Work Profile

Android Work Profiles provide an easy way to separate your work and your life from your smartphone. When this feature is enabled, work and personal apps appear under two separate tabs within the app drawer. Task apps install a small briefcase badge to differentiate them from individual apps.

This will eventually allow anyone using Android for business purposes to separate work and personal apps into one interface and stop all work-related apps in one click (via XDA). It will be available to Google Workspace users for the first time starting next year, with plans to expand to more identity providers soon thereafter.

Currently, the task profile feature is only available on managed devices. But that will change as Google plans to bring this feature to unmanaged Google Workspace devices, which means you won’t have to rely on your employer to keep your device open to us.

In a blog post on Thursday, Google said it plans to increase the availability of Android Activity Profiles for users who can’t be controlled by a Google Workspace account.

Google says users will be able to separate work and personal apps into a single interface and stop all work-related apps with a single click. The Android Activity Profile feature will be available to undocumented Google Workspace users from next year, “with plans to expand to more proprietary providers soon.”

It turns out that Android 12 adds a new type of profile, called Clone, that will enable app integration support for devices running Android 12 and higher. With the new clone profile, users will be able to use three instances of the same app at the same time.

Google recently expanded Android Work Profile support to Android Auto, allowing users to access their Activity app from the Android Auto dashboard without touching their phone.
