Google’s Nearby Share will bring support for group transfers

There are already a number of third-party services available for sharing files and apps. To share apps with other Android users need to download a sharing app first. But Google has made this easy by adding an inbuilt sharing functionality called nearby share.

This feature allows users to share files without the need for any app. And now the company has also added the app sharing function on the nearby share. This feature is the same as the AirDrop functionality offered by Apple for iOS devices.

Earlier, Google is preparing to upgrade to Android’s Nearby Share, an alternative to Apple’s AirDrop file transfer service. As per the report, Google is changing the feature’s device visibility policy to allow you to share files instead of just with nearby contacts.

With Google Play Services version 21.15.12, developers have managed to enable the group transfer feature, and also noticed some changes to the device visibility policy settings.

The Nearby Share will support connecting up to a maximum of four other devices but only one device at a time can transfer files. After updating to version 21.15.12 of Google Play Services, it looks like the feature will finally work now. Here is a video of me transferring from Google Pixel 4 to ASUS ROG Phone 5, OnePlus 9 Pro, and LG Velvet.

Another feature that expects is change invisibility. Instead of limiting you to sharing with “all contacts” nearby, nearby Share will soon let you share files with “everyone” nearby. To prevent abuse, there is a toggle to use “temporarily mode for everyone” which automatically turns the device’s visibility on “all contacts” after a few minutes (currently set to 5 minutes).

In Google Play Services 21.15.12, there is also another toggle called “Keep everyone in mode at all times” which does exactly what it says.

Functionally, nothing has changed here from what we saw in the previous release, but splitting the “Ever Mode” visibility setting into two, clear choices will ensure that people have the correct visibility setting enabled.

These upgrades have not yet begun to roll out in nearby stocks, but since they are almost fully operational, we cannot imagine that it will take much longer to appear in public.
