US PC shipments declined by 8% year-on-year in Q1: Canalys

Canalys released a report that in the first quarter of 2022, US PC shipments (including desktops, notebooks, and workstations) totaled 19.5 million units, down 8% year on year. Canalys said that as employees steadily returned to the company, U.S. desktop computer shipments continued to rebound, increasing by 33%.

The purchase of Chromebooks in the education sector peaked in early 2021 and has been declining since then. , and notebook PC shipments fell by 22%. Tablet shipments remained solid at 5% as the 2021 holiday season’s backlog of orders continued until the first quarter of this year.

  • Dell led U.S. desktop and notebook PC shipments for the third consecutive quarter. Dell’s first-quarter growth rate was 7%, and its shipments in the U.S. once again surpassed 5 million units following the previous three quarters.

  • HP shipped 4.3 million units, ranking second. HP’s shipments fell 40% year over year.

  • Lenovo slipped to third place with a 24% drop in annual shipments. Like HP, shipments of Lenovo’s Chromebook laptops fell, albeit to a lesser extent.

  • Apple’s increase was larger, reaching 18%. Despite weak consumer demand, its MacBook lineup with the M1 chip performed well in the market, attracting many users to upgrade their devices.

  • Acer rounded out the top five with 3% growth.

In terms of tablet PCs, U.S. tablet PC shipments in the first quarter increased by 5% year-on-year, according to the report.

  • Apple’s shipments reached 4.5 million units, leading all tablet PC manufacturers with a market share of 38%.

  • By offering deep discounts, Amazon’s line of Fire tablets grew 7%, dominating the low-end tablet market.

  • Samsung had a flat quarter as consumer demand for mid-to-high-end Android tablets waned.

  • TCL grew by as much as 120% thanks to investments in distribution channels and the TCL Tab Pro 5G launched in partnership with Verizon.

  • Compared with its peers, Microsoft’s Surface Tablet PC has achieved a 25% growth rate.
