Google Authenticator 5.20 update rolling out, hides your 2FA code

Google Authenticator 5.20

Google has started rolling out the new version of its two-factor authenticator (2FA) app – Authenticator 5.20. The latest update hides the two-factor (2FA) authenticator codes until you tap to reveal it. For your information, Google is updating the 2FA app for Android after two years via the Play Store.

The last update for Google’s two-factor authenticator (2FA) app was released in May 2020,  which brought redesigned Material Theme and the ability to easily transfer accounts between devices. In the latest move, Google Authenticator 5.20 version added the ability to hide the six-digit to the app. However, on the right side, the circular countdown indicator remains visible.

To get the PIN, the users need to tap on the hidden code. You can also copy it to your clipboard by long-press. Further, it also lets you perform other actions such as rename, delete, and reorder. More interestingly, this code will also be stored as well as work with Android 13’s new overlay and editor even without revealing it.

You must know that multiple clicks can be made at the same time but a single tap hides the code again. This tweak means that all of your code is not in clear view every time you open the app. This security change is required, even if it adds an extra step to your 2FA workflow.
