Apple designing more functional products since the departure of former design director: Report

Apple’s product design has improved since former design chief Jony Ive left the company in 2019, according to the new information by Bloomberg reporter, via MacRumors.

The reporter believes that since Jony Ive left, Apple has re-emphasized “function” rather than “form”. For example, although the previous Siri remote control design used for the Apple TV makes it easy for people to accidentally lift the remote upside down. The new Siri Remote Control was released in May of this year with design improvements and the addition of TV power and mute buttons.

Aside from these, we have been also informed that the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021 will be released this week. These will be featuring a return to many of the ports that Apple canceled in 2016, including an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and a MagSafe magnetic fast- Charging Port.

Function larger than form certainly applies here, as the new MacBook Pro model is a bit thicker and heavier than the previous generation model. However, it has the expansion connections that many professional users prefer.

The Bloomberg reporter further believes the right-angled flat edges of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series models also served up the form. He concludes that the curved edges on previous iPhones make the display more likely to break if the device is dropped on the edge.

Alex Webb, a Bloomberg reporter wrote:

“Sometimes it’s good to listen to customers, especially when moving from function to form. After all, if professional customers – architects, musicians, filmmakers – can’t plug their laptops into external monitors, they are likely to be lost. And professional users have the ability to pay for top devices that are more profitable for Apple.”

Alex Webb admitted that maybe at least some of these design changes will happen under Jony Ive, but he finally feels that the concept has changed.

“We also think it is worth noting that Jony Ive may have been involved in the design of some of the above products before leaving, or even after leaving because Apple announced that it will still be the main customer of Jony Ive’s independent design company love from. Apple said, Jony Ive participated in the design of the colorful 24-inch iMac released in April last year, more than a year after he left the company.”

Of course, as Alex Webb pointed out, today’s Apple would be different without Jony Ive. Jony Ive is a well-respected creative person who helped design some of Apple’s most iconic products, from iMac and iPod to iPhone and iPad.
