Google would donate US$25 million to European media and information fund to combat fake news

According to the report, Alphabet’s Google said that it would donate US$25 million to the newly established European Media And Information Fund to combat fake news. Earlier, outsiders criticized the technology giant for not doing enough to combat false information on the Internet.

Last year, the new crown pneumonia pandemic and the U.S. election triggered a significant boost in the number of false information.  Many people launched attacks on social media companies, saying that they had not been more proactive in solving this problem, while regulators said they might pass harsh measures. Restrict actions against technology companies.

The European Media and Information Fund was revealed last week by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the European University Institute. The foundation aims to recruit researchers, fact-checkers, non-profit organizations, and other public interest-oriented institutions to help combat falsehoods news.

Matt Brittin, head of business and operations for Google’s Europe, Middle East, and Africa region, announced, “It turns out that we have faced a lot of uncertainty and challenges in the past year. Allowing people to get accurate information and distinguish between facts and false news is becoming more important than ever.”

The retention time of the fund is 5 years,  the European Digital Media Observatory is a project established by the European Commission last year. Its members include fact-checkers and academic researchers. It will evaluate and select projects.
