India suspended approval on the import of Chinese made Wi-Fi devices

India has suspended approval of the import of Wi-Fi modules from China in the past few months, which has caused the delays of American PC manufacturers Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Chinese companies Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, and Lenovo. Launch products in this key growth market.

Sources said that India has postponed the import of finished electronic equipment from China that contains WiFi modules, such as Bluetooth speakers, wireless headsets, smartphones, smartwatches, and laptops.

Since at least last November, the Wireless Planning and Coordination Department (WPC) under the Ministry of Communications of India has suspended approval of the import of these devices. The source understands the lobbying efforts of companies seeking customs clearance.

Since then, more than 80 such applications from US, Chinese and Korean companies have been waiting for WPC approval. Even some Indian companies are waiting for WPC’s approval to import some finished products from China.

Dell, HP, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, and Lenovo have not yet commented. The Ministry of Communications of India has not yet commented. Two sources said that the government still needs to respond to the statements made by industry lobby groups and individual companies.
