Japan’s Fujitsu plans to design its own 2nm chip

The senior management of Japanese technology giant Fujitsu said that the company plans to design advanced semiconductors with a 2-nanometer process by itself, and intends to entrust TSMC to manufacture them.

According to the “Nihon Keizai Shimbun” report, Fujitsu Chief Technology Officer Vivek Mahajan said at a press conference on Tuesday that the company plans to design its own advanced semiconductors with a 2-nanometer process, and intends to entrust wafer foundry leader TSMC to produce them.

Japan Fujitsu 2nm ChipThe report pointed out that Fujitsu aims to complete the energy-saving central processing unit (CPU) equipped with the chip as soon as 2026. TSMC currently plans to mass-produce 2-nanometer chips in 2025.

The company’s advanced process technology blueprint has only been revealed to 2 nanometers, while rival Samsung Electronics has announced that it will mass-produce 1.4-nanometer chips in 2027. In addition, Intel also revealed that the Intel 18A (equivalent to 1.8 nanometers) test chip will be trial-produced before the end of this year.
