Microsoft to introduce new changes in Visual Studio 2022 interface

Microsoft Visual Studio

Microsoft is expected to launch the next iteration of Visual Studio, Visual Studio 2022, on November 8 this year. The IDE has made many improvements to the previous generation of Visual Studio 2019, including a 64-bit version, supporting .NET 6 and C++ 20, and providing better performance for the core debugger.

In addition to functional improvements, there are also some obvious changes to the appearance of the interface in Visual Studio 2022. Microsoft has released a blog post that introduces the differences in the new IDE’s UI.

Firstly, Visual Studio 2022 will get a brand new icon, as shown in the image below. Microsoft said these icons were finalized after discussions with the developer community and reviewing their feedback during the preview process. The resulting icons are modern and intuitive.

Microsoft pointed out that its acceptance criteria for revamping the Visual Studio interface are consistency, legibility, and familiarity. These measures include placing the icon in the correct location, using color to identify reference points, correcting contrast, and keeping colors and symbols in familiar places.

In addition, Microsoft found that dark themes have replaced light themes and become the most popular choice for Visual Studio developers. Therefore, Microsoft adjusted the color contrast of the entire IDE to make the design more accessible, especially for people who use dark themes. One of the key improvements is the highlighted border.

Finally, Visual Studio 2022 reduced the intensity of the accent color to reduce developer eye fatigue, and the default font was changed to Cascadia Mono.

Reportedly, users who are not used to the new Dark Mode interface can download the Visual Studio 2019 extension to change back to the original design.
