Winget is the CLI (command-line interface) of the Windows package manager, similar to the package manager on Linux, users can discover, install, upgrade, delete and configure selected application sets through the widget command-line tool. After installation, users can access Winget through Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or CMD.

The Windows package manager will soon be pushed to systems of version 1809 and above as a Win10 update. If you can’t wait, you can join the Windows Insider program and get the Windows Package Manager through the “App Installer” in the Microsoft Store.

Or you can manually download the package from here, and then follow the steps below:

  • Enable developer mode (go to Settings> Windows Update> Developer and turn it on)
  • Double-click the application package of the Windows Package Manager.
  • After installation, open PowerShell.
  • In PowerShell, type “winget” to start using the package manager.

In addition, Microsoft also released another open-source tool called Windows Package Manager Manifest Creator (aka wingetcreate) to help users submit software packages to the community repository. Users can execute Winget install wingetcreate on the command-line interface to install.
