In 2020, Samsung is the top 5G smartphone company with a huge market share of 94% in the United States. According to recent research, it also maintains a leading position in the global smartphone market in the first quarter of 2021, with shipments of 77 million smartphones, accounting for 23% of the market share.
But according to the latest report from Strategy Analytics, the company’s performance in the 5G smartphone market this quarter was poor. Although its shipments doubled from 8.3 million to 17 million, it still managed to get fifth place in the first quarter of 2021. This is indeed a concern of South Korean technology giants.
Samsung’s 5G smartphone market share dropped from 34.6% to 12.7%, while Apple, OPPO, and Vivo have made unusual progress. The Cupertino-based company is now among the top positions.
The most interesting thing is that it did not deliver a single 5G smartphone in the first quarter of 2020 but still managed to provide as many as 40.4 million 5G iPhones in the first quarter of 2021, gaining a 30.2% market share.
On the other hand, OPPO shipped 21.5 million 5G smartphones globally in the first quarter of 2021, a year-on-year increase of 116.5 percent. Chinese mobile phone brands currently occupy 16.1% of the 5G market, ranking second on the list.
Meanwhile, another Chinese company, Vivo, shipped 19.4 million 5G smartphones in the fourth quarter, an annual growth rate of 646% compared to the first quarter of 2020.
Although Xiaomi has fiercely competed with Samsung and shipped 16.6 million 5G smartphones in the first quarter of this year, it has grown by 564% compared to last year.
Well, in fact, Samsung smartphones are usually expensive, and its 5G smartphones are no exception. Therefore, the company should lower prices and introduce more affordable 5G smartphones.
However, considering the price of its Snapdragon 750G processor and 20K, its recently released 5G phone Galaxy M42 is a very reasonable phone. Therefore, in order to improve performance in the 5G era, the company is working on it and will launch some more affordable 5G phones in the next few days.
