Samsung gives 700MHz 5G equipment to Japanese operator KDDI

5G technology

Samsung has become an equipment supplier for the 700MHz 5G commercial network deployed by Japanese operator KDDI. By using the 700MHz spectrum, KDDI will be able to expand its 5G network coverage, enhance indoor and outdoor mobile network experience, and provide users with reliable 5G connections.

This low-band 5G network is an important supplement to KDDI’s existing 5G services. KDDI currently provides 5G services in the mid-band and millimeter-wave bands. After the introduction of the 700MHz spectrum, KDDI will be able to release a wave of new services for more users.

Through the combination of diversified, high, medium, and low-frequency spectrum resources, KDDI will be able to provide reliable network connections, as well as ultra-high network speeds and wider network coverage. In the deployment of the 700MHz 5G network, KDDI chose Samsung’s advanced 5G solution, including its 700MHz base station and next-generation indoor and outdoor baseband units.

“We are proud to be able to use advanced network technology to provide customers with advanced 5G services,” said Toshikazu Yokai, CEO of KDDI and Director of Mobile Technology. “With the support of leading suppliers such as Samsung, we hope to continue to expand our 5G service coverage and aim to reach 90% population coverage early next year. We hope to provide more users with a further enhanced 5G experience.”

Samsung is very pleased to participate in KDDI’s 700MHz 5G network launch and provide an enhanced user experience for millions of users in Japan. We are proud to contribute to the development of 5G in Japan.” Senior Vice President, Network, Samsung Electronics Sohyong Chong, head of software development in the business department, said.

“We look forward to continuing to use our network expertise and 5G technology leadership to support KDDI in achieving its 5G strategy and business goals.” Samsung has previously given KDDI with base stations and vRAN solutions that support mid-band and 28GHz millimeter-wave frequency bands.

KDDI released 5G commercial services in March 2020. A month later, KDDI and SoftBank declared the establishment of a joint venture-5G Japan that aims to use shared infrastructure to deploy 5G faster in rural areas of Japan.
