Vivo Indian Premier League 2021: MI vs SRH match recap

At the Chidambaram Stadium, Mumbai Indians (MI) recorded their second consecutive victory of the season by beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 9 of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, at the M. A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday.

Rahul’s face once again delivered with the ball when fielding including direct hits in Hardik Pandya’s field promoted a superb comeback in a brilliant game and defended a total of 150/5 against SRH. Chasing 150, Johnny Bairstow, who returned to the role of the opener, and David Werner was wary of Trent Boult and Jaspreet Bumrah in the first two overs.

However, Bairstow could not hold back for very long, as he scored 18 runs in the third over, in which he hit three fours and a six off Boult, bringing his role and ability to chase. Adam Milne, who made his MI debut on the right, followed and scored 19 in the fourth over, with two more sixes added to the count. SRH made a maximum of 57/0 in 6 overs in the powerplay, in which Bairstow was able to clean the ball like no other.

The right hand went out in the opposite direction – fired a hit-wicket that gave MI nowhere to succeed. The MI cleverly funded the dismissal of those Bairstow and brought Rahul Chahar into the attack. Leg-spinner Manish Pandey was dismissed for 2 to bring MI back into the conflict. SRH were 74/2 at the 10-overs mark as Warner continued playing his shots against the MI spinners before the SRH skipper fell victim to an excellent direct-hit from Hardik Pandya inside the circle that ended his innings of 36.

Milne made a brilliant comeback and conceded just 6 runs in the 14th over as Vijay Shankar and Virat Singh were put in a difficult position to chase. In the next over, Chahar scalped two wickets, dismissing Virat and Abhishek Sharma in the same over, with both batsmen trying to take on the leg-spinner. Shankar chased down SRH after hitting sixes in a row to Krunal Pandya, as the Sunrisers needed 31 runs in the final four overs, with Abdul Samad at the other end.

Bumrah bowled the 17th over and conceded just four runs as SRH tried to take Chase deeper. Hardik’s second bullet in the game ended Samad’s innings. With a final two to 21-run requirement, Bumrah got Shankar’s crucial wicket in the over, and Bolt bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Khalil Ahmed in the final over, meaning SRH were bowled out for 137.

Earlier, MI decided to run on the board after winning the toss. The Rohit Sharma-led unit replaced Marco Jensen with Miley, who was playing his first game at MI. Quinton de Kock and Rohit got off to a confident start, smashing three boundaries in the first two overs, with SRH being a little sloppy in the field early on.

The spin was initially introduced by SRH to counter Rohit, but the MI skipper attacked Mujeeb Ur Rehman with a boundary and a six and later made a slow delivery of Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the maximum. De Kok joined the party with some idea and Khalil Ahmed scooped on the fine leg, as the opening pair at the end of the powerplay included fifty.

However, due to Vijay Shankar’s lack of speed, Rohit was dismissed in the next over, giving his first wicket to SRH. Suryakumar Yadav, the man at the front, left an impression with a stylish boundary. With two more agile-looking shots on the right, especially from the inside, Vijay Shankar caught a sharp catch on his bowling before dismissing the MI batsman.

This success forced De Kok and Ishan Kishan to play a lot of quiet overs in the middle, while MI put on a halfway mark at 75/2. Both kept the strike going but the SRH spinners did not allow them to turn in an aggressive position, forcing D Kok to play Mujeebjib Ur Rehman’s aerial shot, went straight to the outfielder at mid-wicket and the left-hander went. Well made 40.

Despite going over four overs, SRH continued to bowl with Mujeeb, who was clubbed for a giant 105m six by Kieron Pollard before the SRH spinner got rid of Kishan, thanks to a fine catch by Bairstow behind the stumps. At the run-scoring Hardik was caught deep in the final over by Virat Singh’s excellent running catch as Khalil Ahmed lost his first wicket.

However, Pollard did not let SRH out with the excellence of his death bowling, while the right-handed West Indian batsman delivered the final two for six, allowing MI to reach the figure of 1 and set a competitive total.

Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians 150/5 (Quinton de Kock 40, Kieron Pollard 35*; Vijay Shankar 2/19) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 137 all out (Jonny Bairstow 43, David Warner 36; Rahul Chahar 3/19) by 13 runs.
