Xiaomi surpassed Apple to become third largest smartphone maker globally in Q3 2020: Gartner

Global smartphone sales declined by 5.7% with 366 million units in Q3, 2020 from 388 million units in Q3, 2019.

According to Gartner, Xiaomi moved ahead of Apple into the third position for the first time ever with sales of 44.4 million units with a 12.1% market share, an increase from 8.5% market at the same time last year.

In the list of top five smartphone makers, Samsung comes on top with 80.8 million smartphone shipments, a 22.2% market share, and 2.2% annual growth. On the other hand, Huawei recorded a decline of 21.3% and shipped 51,830 units as well as a 14.1% market share.

Apple comes in the fourth position with a decline of 0.6%, or from 40.8 million to 40.6 million devices. The top five list is closed by Oppo, whose share increased over the year from 7.9% to 8.2% with sales of 119,117 units.

“Early signs of recovery can be seen in a few markets, including parts of mature Asia/Pacific and Latin America. Near normal conditions in China improved smartphone production to fill in the supply gap in the third quarter which benefited sales to some extent,” said Mr. Gupta. “For the first time this year, smartphone sales to end-users in three of the top five markets i.e., India, Indonesia, and Brazil increased, growing 9.3%, 8.5%, and 3.3%, respectively.”
