Rumors suggest iPhone 17 Pro models might switch back to aluminum frames

Apple has traditionally used a range of materials for the frames of its high-end iPhones, moving from aluminum to stainless steel, and most recently to titanium. Now, whispers in the tech world suggest that for the iPhone 17 series, Apple might revert to aluminum for most models.

According to Jeff Pu, an Apple supply chain analyst, who shared his insights in a note to GF Securities, three out of the four iPhone 17 models – the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max – will feature aluminum frames. Surprisingly, the rumored iPhone 17 Air is expected to keep the more durable titanium frame.

This switch back to aluminum for the Pro models is significant because the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro models were launched with titanium frames, making them lighter than their predecessors with stainless steel frames.

The motivation behind this potential change appears to be environmental. Aluminum has a smaller carbon footprint than titanium, aligning with Apple’s goal to make all its products and supply chain carbon-neutral by 2030. This move echoes Apple’s recent strategy with products like the new Mac mini and certain Apple Watches, potentially positioning some iPhone 17 models as the company’s first carbon-neutral smartphones.

The choice of titanium for the iPhone 17 Air, however, remains a bit of a mystery since aluminum is lighter, which would typically be preferred for a device aimed at being slim and lightweight. Last year, another analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, hinted that the iPhone 17 Air might use a combination of both materials, with less titanium than used in the iPhone 15 Pro models. While the reasons for these material choices are not entirely clear yet, we can look forward to more details emerging as we approach the expected September reveal of the iPhone 17 series.

  • iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air to use top-notch screens

iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air to use top-notch screens

The upcoming iPhone 17 series from Apple will all feature Samsung’s high-quality “M14” OLED screen, says a tech insider on Weibo. Samsung’s “M” series screens are known for being in top smartphones, and the “14” means they use a lot of good materials to make them. This “M14” screen was first seen in last year’s iPhone 16 Pro models. It’s brighter by 30% and lasts longer because they made the blue light part work better.

Interestingly, Samsung’s newest Galaxy S25 Ultra uses a slightly older screen, the M13, which might mean that the regular iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air might have better screens in some ways. Apple choosing the M14 screen for all its new phones makes sense because it wants to add ProMotion to all models. ProMotion means the screen can change how fast it refreshes, up to 120 times per second for smooth scrolling and videos. Before, only the “Pro” iPhones had this.

With ProMotion, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air screens can also slow down to just 1 refresh per second to save power, showing the time, notifications, and background even when the phone is off. Last year, the iPhone 16 Pro models got bigger screens, increasing from 6.12 inches to 6.27 inches for the Pro, and from 6.69 inches to 6.86 inches for the Pro Max.

In 2025, Apple plans to give the regular iPhone 17 a larger 6.27-inch screen too. The new iPhone 17 Air, which takes over from the Plus model, is expected to have a 6.6-inch screen, making it larger than the iPhone 17 but smaller than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

  • New chip for MacBook Pro before iPad Pro

New chip for MacBook Pro before iPad Pro

Apple plans to put its latest M5 chip into the MacBook Pro in the fall, with the iPad Pro following in early 2026, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This is a change from what was expected before, based on how they rolled out the M4 chips last year.

Before we see the M5 MacBook Pro, Apple will update the Mac Studio and Mac Pro with the current M4 chips. These updates might come out around the big developer conference in June 2025.

The M5 chip will have a new kind of ARM design and will be made using a very tiny 3-nanometer technology from TSMC. Instead of going for an even smaller 2-nanometer tech, which would be pricier, Apple chose this for cost reasons. But the top models of the M5 will still be a big step up from the M4, thanks to a special 3D stacking method that makes the chips cooler and more efficient.

This 3D stacking or SoIC technology stacks the chips one on top of the other, which helps with heat and power use. Apple has been working closely with TSMC on this new tech, which also uses some cool new materials for the chip’s package.

There’s already talk in Apple’s code about the M5 chip. One report says that Apple will use this chip not just in new devices but also in their servers to make AI features better, both on your device and online.

  • Apple’s plan for super thin glass in new folding gadget

Apple’s plan for super thin glass in new folding gadget

Apple seems to be getting serious about making its first gadget that can fold. They’re looking at companies that can make very thin glass for this new device. Lens Technology, a company from China, is going to be the main maker of this ultra-thin glass (UTG) for Apple’s new projects, according to reports from The Elec and DigiTimes. They’re expected to get about 70% of the orders, while Corning from the US will probably supply the materials.

Lens Technology is really good at making this glass because they have the right tools and money to do it. They’re especially skilled at making the glass strong and avoiding cracks when it’s cut. They also know how to etch glass well.

They plan to increase how much UTG they can produce in 2025, right before Apple might show off its foldable device in late 2026. Apple wants the middle part of the glass to be very thin, but the rest of it can be a bit thicker to make it last longer.

There are also two companies from South Korea, Dowoo Insys and UTI, who might help make this glass too. Interestingly, Dowoo Insys got patents in October 2024 for making the middle part of the glass thinner, which sounds a lot like what Apple patented around that time.

Samsung Display might be the only one making the folding screens for this new Apple product, which could be a folding iPhone. Experts like Ming-Chi Kuo, Jeff Pu, and sources from The Information and The Wall Street Journal think we might see this new device towards the end of 2026 or the start of 2027.

  • Apple’s iPad still leads the way in tablets

Apple’s iPad still leads the way in tablets

Apple remains at the forefront of the tablet industry, holding a strong 42.3 percent of the global market in the last quarter of 2024, as per a recent study by Canalys.

In that period, Apple managed to ship about 16.9 million iPads, an increase from the 14.8 million shipped the year before. Samsung came in second, with approximately 7 million units shipped, which gave them 17.8 percent of the market. Following Samsung, Lenovo, Huawei, and Xiaomi took the third, fourth, and fifth spots.

Over the entire year of 2024, Apple’s total shipment was around 57 million iPads, capturing 38.6 percent of the market share. This was more than double the number of tablets shipped by Samsung, who managed 27.8 million units.

In 2024, Apple updated its top-tier iPad Pro with an M4 chip and gave the iPad mini a boost with an A17 Pro chip, while the iPad Air was enhanced with an M2 chip. Looking ahead to 2025, Apple is set to introduce updates to its budget-friendly iPad and give another refresh to the iPad Air.

  • Beware of sneaky software thieves on your Mac

Beware of sneaky software thieves on your Mac

Mac computers are facing a growing problem with a type of harmful software known as “stealers.” A recent report from 2025 by Malwarebytes, a company that specializes in malware defense, highlights this trend.

Traditionally, Mac users have mostly dealt with annoying adware or browser hijackers like VSearch or Genieo. However, 2024 marked a shift with a rise in more dangerous malware, specifically information stealers.

These stealers are crafted to hunt down valuable data such as credit card details, login cookies, cryptocurrency, and passwords. This information is gold for cybercriminals looking to profit from their theft.

Often, these malicious programs sneak onto your Mac when you’re looking to download legitimate software. Criminals use deceptive ads on search engines like Google or Bing, where you might click on what seems like a real download link but ends up installing malware instead. They target users by customizing ads based on your location, what software you’re looking for, and even your operating system.

One notorious stealer, called Atomic Stealer or AMOS, first appeared in 2023. Its variant, Poseidon, has become quite popular among hackers. Poseidon claims it can swipe cryptocurrency from over 160 different digital wallets, plus steal passwords from various browsers and some password managers. It disguises itself as popular Mac apps, like the Arc Browser, to fool users into downloading it.

Malwarebytes warns that with stealers like Poseidon, attackers can not only steal your information but also use it to craft sophisticated scams.

To protect yourself, always check the source of your downloads. Make sure you’re getting software from trusted developers and not from questionable websites that mimic real ones. This vigilance can help keep your Mac safe from these sneaky thieves.

  • Apple starts making its new M5 Chip

Apple starts making its new M5 Chip

Apple has kicked off the production of its latest M5 chip, according to reports from South Korean sources. This new chip could show up in devices as early as this year.

The process of putting together the M5 chip began last month, as noted by ET News. This final step, called packaging, comes after the chip is made and involves protecting it and connecting it to other parts of a device.

Apple works with a company called TSMC to make the chips on special silicon discs. After that, other companies, like Taiwan’s ASE Group, America’s Amkor, and China’s JCET, handle the packaging. Reports say ASE started first, with the others set to follow one by one.

Right now, the focus is on making the basic M5 chip, not the more powerful versions like the M5 Pro, M5 Max, or M5 Ultra. The companies involved are also building new facilities to help produce these higher-end models later.

The M5 chip is expected to have a better design based on ARM technology and is being made using TSMC’s advanced 3-nanometer method. Apple chose not to use an even newer 2-nanometer process, likely to keep costs down. However, the more advanced M5 versions will still be a big step up from the current M4 chips, thanks to a special stacking technique called System on Integrated Chip (SoIC).

This stacking method layers the chips on top of each other, which helps manage heat better and reduces power loss compared to flat designs. Apple is also teaming up with TSMC on a new version of this stacking that uses a mix of materials, including carbon fiber, for even better results.

The first device to get the M5 chip is likely to be a new iPad Pro, expected to start production in the second half of next year, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Here’s when other devices might get the M5:

    • iPad Pro: Late 2025 or early to mid-2026
    • MacBook Pro: Late 2025
    • MacBook Air: Early 2026
    • Apple Vision Pro: Fall 2025 to Spring 2026

Hints of the M5 chip have already been found in Apple’s official code. Reports also suggest the chip’s design will help power both regular devices and Apple’s AI servers, boosting performance for both everyday users and cloud services.

  • One Year of Apple Vision Pro: What’s coming up?

One Year of Apple Vision Pro: What’s coming up?

It’s been a whole year since the Apple Vision Pro, a fancy AR/VR headset that costs $3,500, was released to the public. This high-tech gadget hasn’t sold as well as expected, which isn’t surprising because of its steep price. Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, called it a product for those eager to jump into future tech.

Recent whispers suggest that Apple might stop making the current Vision Pro by the end of 2024. But don’t worry, they’ve got enough stock for now, and they’re already looking at creating a new version possibly this year.

    What’s Next for Vision Pro?

There was talk about a second-generation Vision Pro, but those plans seem to be on hold. Instead, Apple seems more focused on bringing out a cheaper model.

    A Small Update Coming Soon?

Instead of a major new model, we might just see a little update this year. Analysts like Ming-Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman think this update could include the new M5 chip, which would be better than the M2 in the current model. This could mean better performance, maybe even bringing the advanced Siri features from Apple’s other devices to the Vision Pro.

However, don’t expect big changes in how it looks or other major features. Apple might just use up leftover parts from the first model. Adding 5G could be on the table, but it’s uncertain if this update will include it or if they’ll save it for a bigger release.

    A Cheaper Vision Pro?

Apple is interested in making a less expensive version of the Vision Pro, aiming for a price closer to that of a top-end iPhone. But this won’t happen soon; the earliest we might see this is 2027. Cutting costs while keeping quality is tricky, especially with the display. They might use cheaper materials and less powerful chips, and might even skip some features like the EyeSight display.

    What About Apple Glasses?

There was an idea for lightweight AR glasses that would work with a Mac, but that project was dropped. Apple still dreams of AR glasses that don’t need to connect to another device for power, but they’re waiting for technology to catch up before trying again.

So, while we’ve celebrated a year with the Vision Pro, Apple is slowly steering towards making it more accessible and advanced, but patience will be key.

  • EU’s new law lets iPhones have first Adult app

EU’s new law lets iPhones have first Adult app

In Europe, a new law called the Digital Markets Act lets developers share iOS apps through other app stores, not just Apple’s. This means that for the first time, you can download a special adult app on your iPhone in the EU.

The app, named Hot Tub, is available on the AltStore PAL, which is like a different app store made by developer Riley Testut. Hot Tub provides a safe and private way to watch adult videos, with no ads or tracking. It’s described as “An elegant, native porn app. Thoughtfully designed, ethically made, and free to use.” Users can look for and watch videos from places like Pornhub and Xvideos right from the app.

Apple has strict rules against adult content in its App Store in many countries, including the U.S. and the EU. However, with the new EU law, apps like Hot Tub can exist outside of Apple’s control.

Apple still checks these apps from other stores for harmful software, but they don’t control what kind of content is allowed. This means other types of content like hate speech or adult materials can appear in these alternative app stores.

Phil Schiller from Apple mentioned in early 2024 that they usually try to keep certain content off the App Store or allow users to choose for themselves. But these controls don’t apply to apps in other marketplaces unless those marketplaces set their own rules.

AltStore was among the first new app stores to appear in the EU after Apple changed its rules to follow the EU’s new law. These alternative stores have to pay a small fee for each app download, but thanks to a special grant from Epic Games, AltStore doesn’t charge users to download it anymore.

Hot Tub might need to pay Apple a fee if it gets many downloads or makes a lot of money. It’s free to use, but there’s also a paid version. Apple’s rule from May 2024 says smaller apps don’t pay this fee for the first three years if they make less than 10 million euros annually.

Right now, Hot Tub is in testing mode and only available in the EU. People in the U.S. can’t download it because they can’t get apps from outside Apple’s App Store.
