    Only Half of Infected Phones Caught

    A new study says Apple is only finding about half of the phones hit by Pegasus. This info comes from iVerify, a mobile security company. They made a $1 app last year that lets you check your phone and send the results to them. You pay once and can scan monthly.

    From those scans, iVerify figured out how common Pegasus is and checked if Apple warned the infected users. After big news coverage, 18,000 more people used the app and found 11 new Pegasus cases in December alone. Now, iVerify estimates about 1.5 out of every 1,000 scanned phones have Pegasus.

    With more scans, they’re sure of this number. They also noticed that not just big shots as politicians get hit—regular folks in jobs like government, finance, logistics, and real estate do too. Some were tracked for years with different Pegasus types.  Surprisingly, Apple didn’t warn about half of these victims. Without verifying, they’d never know their phones were hacked. iVerify says they only counted phones they were sure were infected.

    The same happened with the second iPhone SE, which saw a 50.8% decrease in value in six months, while the iPhone 14 series only went down by 31.1% in the same time. This might be because the SE starts at a lower price, looks older, and isn’t as popular in the used market.

    However, some smaller, cheaper iPhones have done better. The iPhone 13 mini, for example, only lost 19.2% of its value in the first month, compared to 42.6% for the third iPhone SE. After a year, it had depreciated by 46.1%, while the third iPhone SE lost 64.4%. Even after two years, the iPhone 13 mini was down by just 53%, more like the flagships than the SEs.

    The upcoming iPhone SE 4 might change this pattern. If it gets a modern look similar to the iPhone 14 and gets a better chip, camera, and supports Apple’s smart features, it could hold its value better. This would make it stay competitive for longer.

    Like other phones, the value of the iPhone SE drops more when a new model comes out. The second iPhone SE lost another 4% of its value 12 weeks after the third one was released. So, if you want to sell your SE, doing it soon after a new one comes out is smart.

    During my hour-long session, I noticed the weight and comfort issues. Comfort is a big challenge with this kind of technology. On a warm day, even by UK standards, my upper face felt hot inside the headset, similar to my experiences with the Meta Quest 2.

    The weight was particularly noticeable after about 30 minutes. With my Quest, I use an extra battery pack at the back, which helps balance the weight. However, the Vision Pro is front-heavy, and that was starting to bother me, especially when moving my head up and down.

    A recent patent from Apple, highlighted by Patently Apple, offers a solution: moving the processor and other components away from the headset, much like they did with the battery.

    The patent starts by discussing the problem:

    “Head-mounted displays (HMDs) should be comfortable for long periods. As we add more features, battery life, and performance, we add more weight. We need to balance comfort with the device’s capabilities.”

    A heavy front can make wearing the device less enjoyable. Apple recognizes this and suggests a need for a lighter HMD that doesn’t compromise on performance. They also tackle the heat problem, suggesting better ways to manage heat. Currently, the Vision Pro uses a separate battery pack to help with weight, and the patent suggests that the processing could be moved into this external “cartridge.”

    This cartridge would house the processor, which would send video to the headset’s display, and could be attached or detached as needed. One idea is to have the processor in a unit that can either sit in the headset or be housed in an external case, providing flexibility in how the user wears the device.
