    MacBook shipments have gone up recently, but it’s still unclear if the demand for Apple’s laptops is truly bouncing back. A new report from DigiTimes says Apple shipped around 3.5 million to 4 million MacBooks in the first three months of 2025. That’s a big jump from late 2024, when sales were much slower.

    While this sounds like good news, the report points out that this spike may not mean the MacBook market is recovering just yet. The boost could be due to Apple making more MacBooks ahead of its usual spring launch schedule. So, the growth in numbers may not be because of higher customer demand but rather Apple getting ready for upcoming releases.

    Looking ahead, DigiTimes expects shipments in the second quarter to be about the same or even lower. This means the overall demand may still be weak. It’s also worth noting that the first half of the year often has fewer sales for Apple, with stronger performance usually coming later in the year.

    In 2024, MacBook sales had a rough time, with Apple seeing a 27% drop in Mac revenue. Now, with M3 chips in the latest MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models, Apple hopes to turn things around. But it’s still too early to tell if customers are ready to buy again in large numbers.

    All four iPhone 17 models will come with a Wi-Fi 7 chip made by Apple, says Jeff Pu, a tech expert who tracks Apple’s suppliers. In a note shared with GF Securities, Pu explained that Apple finished designing this chip in early 2024. It’s set to appear in the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max later this year.

    The iPhone 16 already has Wi-Fi 7, so that’s not new. What’s exciting is Apple creating its own Wi-Fi chip. Last month, Apple introduced its custom C1 modem for 5G and LTE in the iPhone 16e. Now, it’s moving away from companies like Broadcom for Wi-Fi chips and Qualcomm for modems by building its own tech. This helps Apple rely less on others. Another expert, Ming-Chi Kuo, also predicted this Wi-Fi chip switch for the iPhone 17.

    Wi-Fi 7 works on three bands—2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz—at the same time with the right router. This means faster internet, less lag, and a stronger connection. Speeds can hit over 40 Gbps, four times faster than Wi-Fi 6E, if your device supports it. Expect the iPhone 17 lineup in about six months.

    Pu also shared news about Apple’s first foldable gadgets, set for mass production in late 2026. He says there’ll be a foldable iPhone with a 7.8-inch screen and a bigger 18.8-inch foldable device. This larger one might blend a MacBook and iPad, likely running macOS instead of iPadOS. That hints at a touch-screen Mac, which is a big deal! Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently said iOS 19 and macOS 16 updates could pave the way for such devices, but a touch-screen Mac this soon seems uncertain.

    Last month, Apple launched the C1 modem in the iPhone 16e, part of its shift from Qualcomm. Pu says the slim iPhone 17 Air will use this C1 modem too, matching Kuo’s earlier scoop. Next year, the iPhone 18 Pro models might get a faster C2 modem with better power use and mmWave support in the U.S. Meanwhile, iPhone 17 Pro models will stick with Qualcomm modems for now. Apple’s deal with Qualcomm lasts until March 2027, giving it time to perfect its own chips.

    According to a report from DigiTimes, the supply chain started sending out these new devices in December. While we don’t know the exact date they’ll be available, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has said these new gadgets will hit the market by March or April 2025, possibly even sooner. Gurman also mentioned that a new iPhone SE might be announced this week.

    A report from a Taiwanese publication, which requires a subscription to read, hinted that these new devices will switch to chips made by Apple. Since Apple already designs its own chips for Macs and iPads, this might mean they’re talking about a new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip. However, Gurman had previously mentioned that this change might not happen until 2026.

    Gurman also noted that Apple’s new Wi-Fi chip will support Wi-Fi 6E. It’s not clear yet if this will make much difference for users compared to the current Wi-Fi chips from Broadcom. The main advantage could be in how much battery it uses.

    The new MacBook Airs, coming in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, are expected to use the M4 chip. The iPad Air might get the M3 chip, and the basic iPad 11 could either have the A16 chip or the A17 Pro chip. Apart from these chip updates, there aren’t expected to be many other big changes to these devices.

    1. Connect an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
    2. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled, and your devices are paired if they are wireless.
    3. Close the MacBook lid once the desktop appears on the external monitor.
    4. If the screen turns off momentarily, press a key or move the mouse to wake the display.
    5. In some cases, your Mac may need to be plugged into a power source to stay awake.

    Note: Without an external monitor, closing the lid will still cause the MacBook to sleep.

    Preventing Sleep Without an External Monitor

    If you want your MacBook to stay awake while downloading files, playing music, or running updates, you can adjust the settings depending on your macOS version.

    macOS Monterey and Earlier

    1. Open System Preferences.
    2. Go to Battery (or Energy Saver).

    In newer versions of macOS, the settings have changed, but you can still keep your Mac awake:

    1. Open Terminal.
    2. Enter this command: 
      sudo pmset -a disablesleep 1

    Using Third-Party Apps

    For a simpler solution, apps like Amphetamine (free) or Caffeinated ($3.99) can keep your Mac awake. These apps override the default sleep settings and provide more control over sleep prevention.

    Now you can keep your MacBook active, whether connected to an external display or running tasks with the lid closed.
