Apple App Store review guideline updates now available

Apple announced that the company has updated the “App Store Review Guidelines”, which have three key changes, involving communication outside the app, the collection of contact information within the app, and the App Store In-app activity that appears in.

Moreover, Apple announced that it had reached a $100 million settlement and is currently awaiting court approval. This will resolve a class-action lawsuit filed by US developers who accused Apple of monopolizing the distribution of iOS applications.

As part of the settlement, Apple said it will allow developers to use email and other communication methods to share information about payment methods outside of its iOS apps, which has now been reflected in the updated App Store Review Guidelines. Specifically, Apple removed the following sentences from section 3.1.3 of the guide.

Furthermore, a new guideline under Section 5.1.1 (x) states that apps can request users to provide basic contact information (such as name and email address), provided that the user has the right to choose whether to provide the information.

In addition, whether users provide information should not be a prerequisite for using App functions and services, and App must comply with all other provisions of the relevant guidelines (including restrictions on the collection of children’s information).

Besides, Apple added 2.3.13 to clarify the requirements for developers to display in-app activities in the App Store. In-app events can highlight in-game matches, movie premieres, live broadcast experiences, fitness challenges, etc. They will begin to appear in the App Store on devices running iOS15 and iPad OS15 on October 27th.

The guide is as follows: In-app activities refer to time activities that occur in your App. Your event must belong to one of the event types provided in App Store Connect before it can be displayed on the App Store. The metadata of all activities must be clear and accurate and related to the activity itself (rather than corresponding to the entire App).

The time of the event must match the time and date you selected for the different stores in App Store Connect. If you want to use the activity to generate revenue, please follow the “Business” regulations in Part 3. In addition, the activity deep link you provide must correspond to the correct location in your App.
