T-Mobile announced another milestone: By combining three channels of mid-band spectrum on its 5G network, the company achieved network speeds of 3Gbps. Even download a movie in seconds. T-Mobile said the technology will be available to customers on the network later this year.

Speeds of so-called 3Gbps (or 3000Mbps) are approaching the realm of millimeter wave – a high-band, limited-range 5G. The mid-band 5G usually reaches around 200Mbps. T-Mobile has made some modifications behind the scenes to improve the speed. T-Mobile has previously used carrier aggregation technology to combine two 2.5GHz 5G channels in some parts of its network, and recent tests have boosted speeds with an additional third channel.

Using carrier aggregation to demonstrate network speeds is nothing new – Verizon has previously used the technology to demonstrate 4.2Gbps speeds on its 5G network in 2020. But T-Mobile claims to be the first to use three-carrier aggregation in real-time, independently. This year, T-Mobile customers with Galaxy S22s may be among the “firsts” to be able to use this unique flavor of 5G.

It is understood that T-Mobile is a multinational mobile phone operator. It is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom and belongs to the Freemove Alliance. With 109 million subscribers, the company is one of the largest mobile phone companies in the world.
