The Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 classic are now getting the big One UI 8 software upgrade

Good news! Samsung has finally sent out the major software update that people with a Galaxy Watch 4 or Watch 4 Classic have been looking forward to. This update is called One UI 8 Watch, and it is now arriving on these smartwatches that first came out in 2021. The update started in South Korea and will spread to other countries over the next few weeks.

This file for this new software is quite large—more than 1 gigabyte (GB). For the Wi-Fi versions of the watches, the update codes are R870XXU1JYK4 for the standard Watch 4 and R880XXU1JYK4 for the Watch 4 Classic. We are not yet sure if the versions that use a mobile network (cellular models) have also started getting it.

If you have one of these watches and are in a region where the update is available, you should check for the new software right away. To do this, open the Galaxy Wearable app on your Android phone. From there, go to Watch settings, then select Watch software update, and tap Download and install. After the download is finished, press the Install now button to begin setting it up. Your watch will restart once the process is done.

Important note: Make sure your smartwatch has at least 50% battery power before you start the installation.

For some background, the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic were important devices as they were Samsung’s first smartwatches to run on Google’s Wear OS platform. When they came out in the middle of 2021, they used the Wear OS 4 software with Samsung’s One UI 5 Watch look.

Since then, these watches have been updated four times with big software changes, including Wear OS 5 and Wear OS 6. It’s worth noting that the One UI 8 Watch update is likely the last major software change these older but still great Samsung smartwatches will get.

What’s New in the One UI 8 Watch Update?

The One UI 8 Watch update brings a big change to the way the watch looks and feels (the UI redesign). It introduces a much more modern experience with several fresh features:

  • You can now use “Tiles” pages, which are home to multiple small apps or tools, often called widgets.
  • The watch now includes new designs for watch faces and new small bits of information (complications) you can place on them.
  • The update introduces the “Now Bar,” a feature that stays at the bottom of the screen to show you what you’re doing right now, like playing music or tracking a workout.
  • Samsung has added more “Double Pinch” hand movements, allowing you to control the watch without touching the screen.
  • Other improvements include a better-looking battery charging screen and a clearer view for alerts, which are now organized into tidy piles or “stacked notifications.”
  • It’s simpler and faster to find and change watch faces.
  • The Samsung Health app has received new features to improve fitness tracking.
  • The app list (app drawer) is easier to use, offering a simple list sorted by letter, or a new, organized grid view.

Samsung’s new three-way Folding phone faces real-world toughness tests

Samsung recently released its first-ever triple-folding phone, the Galaxy Z TriFold. While the device is a marvel of engineering, recent hands-on tests show it might not be as sturdy as the company’s more traditional folding phones. In a series of intense durability challenges, the TriFold struggled when pushed to its limits. Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which can handle quite a bit of pressure, the TriFold showed signs of damage relatively quickly.

One major test involved folding and unfolding the phone thousands of times. Samsung claims the device can survive 200,000 folds, but a live test by a group of tech reviewers showed the hinges starting to act up much sooner. One hinge began creaking after about 61,000 folds, and the second one followed at 121,000. By the time they hit roughly 145,000 folds, the hinges lost their “springiness,” making it hard for the phone to stay flat or close properly. While the screen itself kept working, the mechanical parts were clearly wearing out.

Beyond the folding tests, the phone also faced a “bend test” where it was forced in the wrong direction. Unfortunately, the TriFold didn’t survive this as well as previous models; the frame snapped and the screen pixels went dark with a reasonable amount of force. It seems that having more hinges and a thinner body makes the device more vulnerable to physical accidents.

Business-wise, Samsung isn’t too worried about these early hiccups or even the fact that they aren’t making much money on the TriFold right now. They view it as a “statement piece”—a way to show the world they can build technology that others can’t. The phone is only being sold in very small numbers, which helps keep it exclusive.

However, the company is feeling some pressure regarding its next big standard release, the Galaxy S26. With the costs of parts like processors and cameras going up, Samsung is looking for ways to keep prices fair for customers without losing money. While the TriFold is a cool look into the future, the success of their upcoming regular flagship phones is what really keeps the company steady. For now, the TriFold remains an impressive but delicate piece of tech for early adopters who are willing to be extra careful with it.
