Galaxy Watch 5 series gets One UI 8 update in the US and early One UI 8.5 test for Galaxy A17
Samsung is currently focused on two main areas of software development this week: giving existing devices a big upgrade and starting work on the next major software release for other models.
First, there is good news for people who own a Galaxy Watch 5 or Galaxy Watch 5 Pro in the United States. They are now receiving the final, stable version of the One UI 8 Watch software. This important update, which runs on Wear OS 6, has been officially released after Samsung completed its testing phase, known as the beta program, recently.
Right now, it looks like the update is being sent out mainly to the smartwatches that have cellular connections. However, it is expected that Samsung will quickly expand the rollout to the Wi-Fi-only watches and to users in other countries soon. Along with all the new features from One UI 8 Watch, this package also includes the November 2025 security patch, which fixes about 25 different security issues.
To find out if your watch is ready for the new software, simply open the Samsung Wearable app on your phone. From there, go to Watch settings, choose Watch software update, and then press Download and install.
Shifting focus to the future, Samsung has already begun internal preparations for the upcoming version of its phone software, One UI 8.5, which is based on the Android 16 system. The news is notable because testing has started on a device that is not usually first in line for major updates.
The budget-friendly Galaxy A17 5G has appeared in internal logs, confirming that Samsung is now working on a One UI 8.5 testing version for it. This early start for the A17 is surprising, as these tests usually begin only with the high-end Galaxy S series phones. Because the development process is starting early, it suggests the Galaxy A17 might receive its big software upgrade shortly after the official launch.
The One UI 8.5 software is set to be officially released alongside the new Galaxy S26 series early next year, probably in February or March of 2026. Following that official debut, Samsung will then begin sending the update to all existing Galaxy phones, including the Galaxy A17, a few months later.
