Google Updates: Quicker Photos Search, new emergency tools for India, and AI for your car
Google is ending the year with several big updates that make its apps and services more useful. From a faster way to find your friends in Google Photos to life-saving technology in India, here is a look at what’s new.
Finding Friends and Pets Just Got Easier
Google Photos is bringing back a fan-favorite feature that makes searching much faster. If you use the “Face Groups” setting, you will now see a row of faces right at the top of the search page. Instead of typing out a name, you can simply tap on a picture of a person or a pet to see every photo you have of them.
This shortcut is rolling out to both the standard search and the new AI-powered “Ask Photos” tool. While it’s a small change, it saves a lot of time for people who have thousands of pictures and want to find a specific memory in seconds.
Help Is on the Way: Emergency Location Service Launches in India
In a major safety move, Google has officially brought its Emergency Location Service (ELS) to India. This technology helps emergency workers find you quickly when you call for help. When someone dials 112, the phone automatically sends its precise location to the police or medical teams.
The service has started in Uttar Pradesh and is expected to expand soon. It is designed to work even if your signal is weak or if the call drops after just a few seconds. Most importantly, this is a free feature built into Android phones, and Google says it does not store your location data—it only shares it with rescuers during a real emergency.
Gemini AI Joins You for the Drive
Google’s powerful AI, Gemini, is now making its way into cars through Android Auto. This update changes how you interact with your car’s screen. Instead of using basic voice commands, you can now have a natural conversation with your car.
Early tests show that Gemini is great at handling complex tasks, like summarizing a long string of text messages or finding a specific address buried deep in an old email. You can even ask it to suggest a playlist for a rainy day or tell you interesting facts about the city you are driving through. While it is still a work in progress, it makes the driving experience feel much more modern and helpful.
