Google Chrome adopts new carousel to show recent sites on Android

Posted on

It’s not very often when Google makes significant changes to Chrome. This time, Google is experimenting to add different types of new tab designs to the Android Chrome browser. In the latest move, Google Chrome’s new tab page design seems to adopt a carousel to show recently visited websites.

By looking at the new design, we have found that the new Google Chrome Page on Android has a long Google logo and Omnibox for search and URL entry. Below the search box, you can see recently visited site shortcuts. Previously, the favicons are used and have historically been arranged in a 4 x 2 grid.

Now, Google is testing a carousel design that carries up to 12 pages but you can currently see 4-5 in one go. To see more pages, you can scroll through the carousel. This section takes less space compared to the previous design, which marginally benefits Discover and Following/RSS feeds.

Previously, Google tested a confusing new tab page design that includes a search bar and a carousel for recently visited websites. More interestingly, there is a “Continue browsing” shortcut that shows recent tabs and replaced the tab grid. Further, it has a discover and following feed section.

However, Google has never widely rolled out but was quite stark for breaking Chrome’s navigation paradigm and greatly elevating the NTP over the tab switcher. In recent weeks, the company has designed Chrome’s new tab page but the changes are minor.
