Samsung makes big changes to win the race for next-generation memory chips
Samsung Electronics is making a major change to how it is organized inside its company. This big shift is all about staying strong in the fight to make better memory chips and leading the way in technology that supports Artificial Intelligence (AI). The company is setting up a new main group and making adjustments to the teams that build the fastest memory parts.
The most important change is creating a Memory Development Division. This new, high-level group will act as the single main control center for all memory chip research and creation. Before this, different teams worked on different memory types, such as the chips that help computers run programs (DRAM) and the chips that store your files (NAND flash).
Now, this new division will oversee all of them. The purpose of this change is to better handle the tough and complex competition in chip technology, especially when it comes to creating super-fast AI memory chips. An experienced leader who previously headed the DRAM design team will now be in charge of this new group.
In a related move, the special team Samsung had set up just for making HBM (High-Bandwidth Memory)—the extra-quick memory chips needed for AI systems—is being integrated into the larger DRAM design team.
This decision is a sign that Samsung now feels much more confident in its ability to make these advanced HBM chips. The separate team was first created last year to help the company catch up with its rivals. Now, after confirming that it is successfully supplying its newest HBM chips to large global tech firms, Samsung feels stable enough to merge the experts back into the main development line.
The company is also setting up a Digital Twin Center to help build an AI Factory. A “digital twin” is essentially a perfect virtual copy of a real factory and its operations. By creating this virtual environment, Samsung can use AI to manage and improve every step of designing and producing chips without wasting time or materials in the physical factory.
They are planning to use thousands of powerful graphics units to make this AI factory work smoothly. This project shows their focus on using the most advanced technology to keep their manufacturing process at the very top of the industry. These organizational steps confirm that Samsung is focused on using its best technical knowledge to win the future of AI hardware and keep its leading position in the world of computer chips.
