Samsung’s new top mobile leader and the focus on extra-smart on-phone AI

In two major recent announcements, Samsung showed a clear path for its mobile business, focusing both on leadership and cutting-edge technology. The company confirmed a big internal change, promoting a key executive to a higher position, while also highlighting its plan to make smartphones incredibly smart using powerful, local Artificial Intelligence (AI).

A New Boss in Charge of Mobile

Samsung recently shuffled its leadership, giving more power to the head of its mobile division, TM Roh. He has been promoted to co-Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is now leading the entire Device eXperience (DX) Division. This move shows that Samsung recognizes his strong performance.

The promotion is essentially a reward for keeping the mobile business—known as the MX Division—successful and profitable, even during tough global times, like the COVID-19 pandemic, when many other companies struggled. Mr. Roh will continue to directly manage the mobile business, making sure its strategy is followed closely.

Under his watch, Samsung’s mobile segment has already changed a lot. This includes getting rid of the old Note series, developing popular foldable phones, and introducing early versions of Galaxy AI. This new leadership confirms Samsung’s commitment to growing its business and moving toward what it calls Ambient AI—a future where smart devices work seamlessly all around us.

Bringing Cloud-Level Smartness to Your Handset

The second big piece of news is Samsung’s strong push to bring “cloud-grade” AI performance directly onto its phones. This means the powerful tasks usually handled by huge computers in the cloud—which require an internet connection—will soon be done locally on your device.

This approach is part of Samsung’s larger strategy to offer “AI for All.” There are several important benefits to making the phone itself super-smart:

• Speed: Since the phone doesn’t have to wait for information to travel to a server and back, AI features work much faster.
