Reports indicate that approximately fifty Apple employees have been terminated following an internal investigation into potential fraud related to the Matching Grants program. Furthermore, six former employees in the Bay Area have been formally charged with criminal offenses, specifically tax fraud, connected to the alleged scheme.

It is claimed that certain employees collaborated with specific non-profit organizations, some reportedly connected to the Indian community, to manipulate the program. The scheme purportedly worked as follows: employees would make donations to these non-profits, triggering Apple’s matching contributions. However, instead of the funds remaining with the charities, they were allegedly funneled back to the employees, allowing them to effectively pocket Apple’s matching funds.  

    If these allegations are proven true, the implications are significant. Not only would this constitute a serious breach of Apple’s internal policies, but it would also violate US tax laws. By falsely claiming charitable donations, the employees could have illegally reduced their tax burden, amounting to tax fraud. The charges currently relate to approximately $152,000 over three years, suggesting a potentially widespread and sustained effort to exploit the program.

Initially, projections were optimistic, with anticipated shipments reaching up to 10 million units in 2024.

    However, market analysis painted a different picture. Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), a prominent market research firm, significantly revised its forecast in October, lowering the projection to a more modest 6.7 million units. This substantial downward revision signaled a need for strategic readjustment.

    LG Display’s response is a pragmatic one. Rather than investing in an entirely new production line for iPhone OLED panels – a costly endeavor estimated at around 2 trillion won (approximately $1.5 billion) – the company is opting to adapt its existing facility. This line, originally built for 3.4 trillion won, is currently dedicated to producing OLED panels for tablets and PCs.

    However, due to the sluggish demand for the OLED iPad Pro, the line has been operating at reduced capacity. By repurposing it for iPhone panel production, LG Display can effectively expand its iPhone OLED panel manufacturing capabilities with minimal additional investment. This strategic move allows for greater efficiency and resource optimization.  

    OLED technology offers several distinct advantages over traditional LCD displays. These include superior brightness, a significantly higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks, and improved power efficiency, which translates to longer battery life for devices. These enhancements contribute to a more immersive and visually appealing user experience.

    While both iPad and iPhone OLED panels share the core benefits of OLED technology, there are some key technical differences in their construction. iPad displays utilize glass substrates with thin film encapsulation (TFE), a process that protects the delicate OLED materials from moisture and oxygen. In contrast, iPhone panels employ a polyimide substrate with TFE and feature a single emission layer, as opposed to the double emission layer used in iPad displays. This subtle difference is tailored to the specific requirements of each device. 

    Reports suggest that LG Display intends to maintain sufficient iPad OLED inventory through February while simultaneously seeking Apple’s approval for the production line modification. This careful planning ensures a smooth transition and minimizes any potential supply disruptions.

    The company has set an ambitious goal to supply 70 million iPhone OLED panels in 2024, a significant increase from the mid-60 million units supplied last year and the 51.8 million units supplied in 2023. This target underscores LG Display’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for OLED displays in the iPhone market.  

    Looking ahead, the future of OLED technology in Apple’s product lineup remains a topic of considerable interest. Rumors suggest that Apple is exploring an OLED version of the iPad Air, potentially for release in 2026. However, given the current sales performance of the OLED iPad Pro models, the transition of the iPad Air from LCD to OLED could face delays of more than a year, according to DSCC.

    Furthermore, there are expectations that Apple’s 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models could also make the switch from mini-LED to OLED displays as early as 2026, further solidifying the growing prominence of OLED technology across Apple’s product ecosystem.     Pegasus spyware, created by NSO, is a danger to iPhone users’ privacy. This sneaky program can take over your phone without you doing anything. It grabs almost all your info and some versions can even turn on your camera and microphone. Pegasus uses secret flaws in iPhones that Apple hasn’t found yet. Still, Apple has a plan to catch it.

    Apple’s Efforts to Find Pegasus

    Apple built special tools into iOS to spot when spyware sneaks into an iPhone, even if they don’t know how it got there. When they think a phone’s been hit, they warn the owner and start hunting for the weak spot Pegasus used. Last summer, for example, Apple sent alerts to users in nearly 100 countries.

    Apple has told tons of people in 98 countries that “mercenary spyware” might have attacked their phones, risking nearly all their private data. They admit they’re not always 100% sure, but they’re pretty confident and tell users to take the warning seriously.

    Only Half of Infected Phones Caught

    A new study says Apple is only finding about half of the phones hit by Pegasus. This info comes from iVerify, a mobile security company. They made a $1 app last year that lets you check your phone and send the results to them. You pay once and can scan monthly.

    From those scans, iVerify figured out how common Pegasus is and checked if Apple warned the infected users. After big news coverage, 18,000 more people used the app and found 11 new Pegasus cases in December alone. Now, iVerify estimates about 1.5 out of every 1,000 scanned phones have Pegasus.

    With more scans, they’re sure of this number. They also noticed that not just big shots as politicians get hit—regular folks in jobs like government, finance, logistics, and real estate do too. Some were tracked for years with different Pegasus types.  Surprisingly, Apple didn’t warn about half of these victims. Without verifying, they’d never know their phones were hacked. iVerify says they only counted phones they were sure were infected.

    In Europe, a new law called the Digital Markets Act lets developers share iOS apps through other app stores, not just Apple’s. This means that for the first time, you can download a special adult app on your iPhone in the EU.

    The app, named Hot Tub, is available on the AltStore PAL, which is like a different app store made by developer Riley Testut. Hot Tub provides a safe and private way to watch adult videos, with no ads or tracking. It’s described as “An elegant, native porn app. Thoughtfully designed, ethically made, and free to use.” Users can look for and watch videos from places like Pornhub and Xvideos right from the app.

    Apple has strict rules against adult content in its App Store in many countries, including the U.S. and the EU. However, with the new EU law, apps like Hot Tub can exist outside of Apple’s control.

    Apple still checks these apps from other stores for harmful software, but they don’t control what kind of content is allowed. This means other types of content like hate speech or adult materials can appear in these alternative app stores.

    Phil Schiller from Apple mentioned in early 2024 that they usually try to keep certain content off the App Store or allow users to choose for themselves. But these controls don’t apply to apps in other marketplaces unless those marketplaces set their own rules.

    AltStore was among the first new app stores to appear in the EU after Apple changed its rules to follow the EU’s new law. These alternative stores have to pay a small fee for each app download, but thanks to a special grant from Epic Games, AltStore doesn’t charge users to download it anymore.

    Hot Tub might need to pay Apple a fee if it gets many downloads or makes a lot of money. It’s free to use, but there’s also a paid version. Apple’s rule from May 2024 says smaller apps don’t pay this fee for the first three years if they make less than 10 million euros annually.

    Right now, Hot Tub is in testing mode and only available in the EU. People in the U.S. can’t download it because they can’t get apps from outside Apple’s App Store.

    Apple is getting close to making a deal with Indonesia that could let them start selling the iPhone 16 again. According to Bloomberg, this deal involves Apple investing more money in the country.

    Back in October, Indonesia stopped the sale of the iPhone 16 because Apple wasn’t making enough of the phone parts there, needing at least 35% of the materials to be local. Apple has now promised to invest $1 billion, which includes setting up a factory for AirTags. This is much more than their earlier offers of $10 million and $100 million, which Indonesia turned down.

    “I strongly believe it will resolve very, very soon,” said Rosan Roeslani, Indonesia’s investment minister, in a Bloomberg TV interview in Davos. He hopes the issue will be sorted out in “one or two weeks.” He mentioned that there was some confusion about how the local content rules are calculated but thinks they’ve found a way around it.

    Indonesia is a big market for Apple, with over 280 million people using around 354 million phones. Apple has been running developer academies there since 2018, but so far, there’s no Apple factory in the country.
