The secret Google app that will make Samsung’s new Smart Glasses amazing
Samsung is already working hard on its new smart glasses. To make them, the company is partnering with Google for the software and with popular eyewear brands like Gentle Monster and Warby Parker for the design. Beyond advanced tools like Gemini, there is one special application that could genuinely make these new glasses popular and successful, and it is a creation of Google.
That special app is Google Translate. A recent industry report points out that Google is actively making improvements to the Google Translate app so that it functions perfectly on smart glasses. Currently, if you use the app’s Live Translate feature, you can choose to hear the translated audio through headphones, the speaker, or stay silent (Mute).
However, in a test version of the Translate app, a new setting called ‘Glasses’ was found. This discovery strongly suggests that the translated words will soon be able to play directly through the audio system of the new Android XR smart glasses.
Furthermore, the Live Translate feature usually only works when you are actively using the application on your phone’s screen. If you move away to check a different app, the live translation stops. Google is fixing this issue to allow the tool to keep working even when it is not the main app you are focused on. The company plans to use a small, continuous notification to ensure the translation runs smoothly in the background.
These updates are vital because they will enable Google Translate’s real-time translation to work correctly and easily on the upcoming smart glasses. This is probably how Google is preparing for the release of devices running the Android XR system, and it is expected that Samsung will be one of the first major companies to launch this new type of wearable device.
Reports suggest that Samsung’s first version of smart glasses will be launched sometime in 2026, though they will not include a see-through Augmented Reality (AR) screen. The South Korean firm’s second generation of smart glasses, which will feature an AR display, is expected to arrive in 2027 and will compete directly with similar devices from companies like Apple and Meta.
