Samsung confirms a security breach that exposed the personal data of the US customers

According to official confirmation by Samsung, the company had faced a security breach in late July that exposed the personal data of the customers living in the US.

In the published report on September 2, Samsung says that an unauthorized third party accessed the data of the US customer in late July, which was discovered by the company on August 4.

The hacked information includes emails, phone numbers, and product registration information linked with your Samsung account.

Read this statement from Samsung:

We want to assure our customers that the issue did not impact Social Security numbers or credit and debit card numbers, but in some cases, may have affected information such as name, contact and demographic information, date of birth, and product registration information. The information affected for each relevant customer may vary. We are notifying customers to make them aware of this matter.

Samsung has already sent an email to those affected by this issue, if you didn’t receive it yet, it means your data wasn’t on the breached list. Read ahead:

We have communicated directly with certain customers we identified as affected by this issue to make them aware of the matter. We value the trust of our customers and, should we determine through our investigation that the incident requires further notification, we will contact you accordingly.

What next for you?

Samsung says there is no immediate action necessary for any of Samsung’s platforms. But the company still recommends that you:

  • Remain cautious of any unsolicited communications that ask for your personal information or refer you to a web page asking for personal information
  • Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from suspicious emails
  • Review your accounts for suspicious activity
