Samsung has secured ‘extra’ EUV lithography equipment from ASML

According to the latest report, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong has secured “extra” extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment after visiting ASML in the Netherlands. Moreover, the industry believes that ASML is the only manufacturer of high-end chip process equipment in the world, and the stable supply of EUV equipment is the key for Samsung to overtake TSMC and grab the global foundry leader.

According to Korean media Business Korea, Samsung said on the 15th that when Lee Jae-yong visited ASML’s headquarters in the Netherlands on the 14th, he met with ASML CEO Peter Wennink and other executives to extensively discuss the future of semiconductor technology, market prospects, and the supply of EUV equipment. The industry previously reported that ASML’s annual shipment of EUV equipment was 48 units last year, of which 15 units were won by Samsung and 20 units were won by TSMC. According to the report, ASML’s EUV lithography equipment shipments are estimated to be 51 units this year, of which Samsung has reserved 18 units and TSMC has guaranteed at least 22 units.

According to Korean media reports, if Samsung can win more EUV machines this time, it will get at least 18 this year, but Samsung did not elaborate on the content of the “extra” EUV equipment obtained this time. Samsung began to cooperate with ASML in the semiconductor process and equipment development in the 2000s. In 2012, Samsung took a stake in ASML to strengthen the partnership between the two parties.
