Nintendo awarded $2.1 million against pirated games RomUniverse lawsuit

Nintendo of America has been awarded $ 2.1 million in damages following a lawsuit filed by pirated game seller RomUniverse. Nintendo actually filed a lawsuit in September 2019 seeking $15 million in damages from the company. Although the case was decided in favor of Nintendo, the judge chose a lower number of $2,115,000.

The RomUniverse was originally run by California resident Matthew Stroman, who argued in court that he did not upload pirated games. But Nintendo, in its original complaint, claimed that the site offered a $ 30 subscription per year, which allowed users to download games faster than subscribers.

That kind of profit from Nintendo’s copyrighted works shows how the company won the $ 2.1 million decision. Nintendo says the Rome Universe has a list of both new and old Nintendo games, which have been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times.

Nintendo has previously won similar cases in US and UK courts, including $2.1 million in settlements against ROM sellers. The company is notorious for cracking down on people who believe its intellectual property is stolen. There are a number of lawsuits targeting Nintendo Switch hack manufacturers and resellers.

The actions aren’t limited to just civil lawsuits. In 2020, two hack creators — including one named Gary Bowser — were arrested and charged with 11 felonies. Nintendo also filed a lawsuit against Bowser this year, alleging similar copyright infringement for creating and selling Switch hacks. Nintendo called this sort of copyright infringement a “serious, worsening international problem” in one of its earlier lawsuits.
