SK Hynix unveils supply of industry’s first HBM3 DRAM to Nvidia with bandwidth upto 819GB/s

According to the latest report, SK Hynix announced that the company has started mass production of HBM3, the DRAM with the best performance in the current industry.

HBM (High Bandwidth Memory): It is a high-value, high-performance memory composed of vertically stacked DRAM chips, and its data processing speed is significantly faster than that of traditional DRAM. HBM3 DRAM is the fourth generation of HBM products. The previous three generations were HBM (first generation), HBM2 (second generation), and HBM2E (third generation).

SK Hynix announced in October last year that it had successfully developed the industry’s first HBM3 DRAM, and announced the start of mass production after seven months, which is expected to further consolidate the company’s leadership in the high-end DRAM market.

With the accelerated development of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data, major technology companies around the world are exploring innovative ways to quickly process the rapidly growing volume of data. Compared with traditional DRAM, HBM has significant advantages in terms of data processing speed and performance and is expected to gain widespread industry attention and be increasingly adopted.

NVIDIA recently completed a performance evaluation of the SK Hynix HBM3 sample. SK Hynix will supply HBM3 to Nvidia systems, which are expected to start shipping in the third quarter of this year. SK Hynix will also increase HBM3 production in the first half of this year as planned by Nvidia.

The highly anticipated Nvidia H100 is considered to be the largest and most powerful accelerator in the world today. SK Hynix’s HBM3 bandwidth can reach 819GB/s, which is expected to enhance the performance of accelerated computing. This bandwidth is equivalent to being able to stream 163 Full-HD movies per second (about 5GB per movie).

SK Hynix President (Business Director) Lu Zhongyuan said that the close cooperation with NVIDIA has enabled SK Hynix to gain first-class competitiveness in the high-end DRAM market. “Our goal is to become a Solution Provider that understands and addresses customer needs through continuous, open collaboration.”
