Someone reverse-engineered Apple’s C94 connector to a PCB with a USB-C female port

A video that changed the iPhone’s Lightning interface to a USB-C interface was circulated on YouTube. In the video, the video author plugs the USB-C port of the power adapter originally plugged into the MacBook. On the iPhone X that has been modified by magic, the iPhone shows that it can be charged normally. And when the dual USB-C interface data cable is used to connect the iPhone and MacBook, the display data transmission is also normal.

According to the video author, he reverse-engineered Apple’s C94 connector and made a PCB with a USB-C female port. After the schematic is determined, how to shrink it and install it in the iPhone is a big challenge. The second half of the video, briefly demonstrated some production processes, including using CNC to make an outlet on the frame of the iPhone and soldering the circuit of the USB-C interface to the original circuit.

The creator of the video is currently studying for a master’s degree in robotics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL). His expertise and skills have helped this magic reform to some extent. Spent a total of several months completing the interface replacement. In a blog post in May, he detailed the ideas behind the interface replacement and the challenges of replacing the Lightning interface.

The European Commission proposed legislation in September to designate USB-C as the standard charging port for all mobile devices. If the legislation succeeds in the end, Apple will have two years to switch to the USB-C interface on the iPhone.
