MediaTek and Ericsson successfully completed the 5G NR dual-connection test

5G technology

MediaTek and Ericsson successfully completed the 5G NR dual-connection test, effectively combining the wide coverage of the sub-6GHz frequency band and the high-rate characteristics of millimeter-wave (mmWave), using diversified Spectrum resources provide higher network speed and lower latency. This move will be conducive to the advancement of 5G SA independent networking.

This is the first dual-connection test of millimeter-wave combined with the Sub-6GHz frequency band under the 5G SA experimental network. It is tested by aggregating a high-band bandwidth of 800MHz and a mid-band bandwidth of 60MHz and using a MediaTek M80 5G modem.

The equipment achieves a downlink rate of up to 5.1Gbps. This test is based on Ericsson’s wireless network system hardware, 5G core network, and IP call center system architecture. 5G NR dual connectivity is an important technology introduced in the 3GPP Release-16 version.

It provides multi-standard and multi-band support for terminal equipment and wireless access networks, effectively improving spectrum efficiency and load balancing, and is a key technology for independent 5G SA networking. 5G NR dual connectivity can not only optimize the 5G network environment but also further reduce latency, increase throughput and network reliability.

Prior to this, MediaTek and Ericsson had successfully completed Sub-6GHz FDD/TDD 5G carrier aggregation interoperability tests based on Dimensity 5G mobile chips and established 5G SA carrier aggregation data calls. This test is based on the MediaTek M80 5G modem that successfully enabled the 5G NR dual connection function.
