According to the report, the chip & components business annual growth of the global chip market is expected to exceed 9%, division head and new co-CEO Kyung Ke-Hyun told an annual shareholder meeting without giving further details.

Moreover, the Samsung foundry business seeks new customers in China, where it expects high market growth and focuses on increasing supply capacity by improving operations at its plants.

The new co- CEO also said the South Korean tech giant was improving its response to the production of made-to-order chips in emerging sectors such as high-performance computing and artificial intelligence (AI).

Answering shareholders’ questions about yields of 5-nanometers or less for cutting-edge chips in the foundry business, Kyung said the initial ramp-up took time, but operations were slowly improving.

However, Samsung aims to improve both profitability and supply by optimizing line operations and continuously improving processes that are already heavily productive.

The global tightness in the supply of chips and spare parts, along with limited production capacity, has led governments and chip makers to invest in booming demand for chips used in everything from smartphones to cars.
