SMIC’s net profit for the first quarter reached US$158.9, thanks to 55/65 nm technology

SMIC released its first-quarter earnings report today. The financial report shows that SMIC’s revenue in the first quarter was 1.1 billion U.S. dollars, and the market expected it to be 1.047 billion U.S. dollars, compared with 905 million U.S. dollars in the same period last year.

The net profit for the first quarter of 2021 was US$158.9 million, and the market expected it to be US$104 million, compared with US$64 million in the same period last year.

In terms of technology nodes, the top three wafer revenue ratios are: 55/65 nanometers accounted for 32.8% of wafer revenues, 0.15/0.18 micron accounted for 30.3% of wafer revenues, and 40/45 nanometers accounted for 16.3% of wafer revenues %.

SMIC’s revenue from Mainland China and Hong Kong, China was 55.6% this quarter, which was down compared to the previous quarter, while revenue from North America was 27.7%, from Europe and Income in Asia has risen to 16.7%.

Due to the shortage of cores, SMIC’s capacity utilization rate continued to increase this quarter, which was 98.7% this quarter, which was higher than 98.5% in 2020Q1 and 95.5% in 2020Q4. The monthly production capacity has increased from 520,000 8-inch equivalent wafers in 2020Q4 to 540,000 in this quarter, which is also due to the expansion of SMIC’s 200mm wafer fab capacity this quarter.

In terms of wafer applications sold by SMIC, the share of smartphones and smart homes continued to decline. This quarter was 35.2% and 13.9%, respectively. In terms of smartphones, there were significant declines year-on-year and month-on-month. For this reason, the income of consumer electronics and other application vendors has also increased, respectively 20.4% and 30.5%, which both increased year-on-year.

SMIC stated that its revenue in the second quarter is expected to grow by 17% to 19% from the previous quarter, and the gross profit margin is expected to be between 25% and 27%. Revenue in the first half of this year is expected to be approximately US$2.4 billion.
