Apple now allows synchronization between macOS and iOS devices

Late last month, Apple released a special independent software update called “DeviceSupportUpdate” for Mac computers running the macOS BigSur operating system.

It purposes to “ensure that iOS and iPad OS devices are compatible with macOS devices.” (Ensure proper updates and restores for iOS and iPadOS devices with Macs).

Although no other update details have been provided, many believe that the update adds support for newly released devices, including the iPhone 13 series, iPad mini 6, and the ninth-generation iPad. However, the update first operates via macOS’s “System Preferences-Software Update”, which makes some users curious about its appearance.

macOS and iOS synchronization

Moreover, it is reported that sometimes when a user connects an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a Mac, a software update application called “Mobile Device Updater” will automatically appear on the computer screen and a dialog box will pop up.

“You need to update the software to connect to ‘iPhone’. Do you want to download and install this update now?” is displayed. This dialog box indicates that the user’s mobile device has been separately updated to the new iOS or iPadOS version, but the Mac may no longer recognize it, and the synchronization software on the Mac needs to be updated to synchronize with the user’s mobile device.

macOS and iOS synchronization

Such signs indicate that Apple has chosen to reduce its reliance on “Mobile Device Updater”. After changing the updated policy, macOS will first update via “System Preferences – Software Update”. Later, through the “Mobile Device Updater” update, when users plug in their iOS device, users don’t need to wait any longer.

The reason for this change may be to reduce the frequency of “Mobile Device Updater” dialog boxes on computer screens when iOS devices and macOS devices are connected, as this may lead some users to think that it is some kind of malware.

While this isn’t a particularly big change, the macOS software update will give users a better experience by installing updates that support future synchronization of mobile devices.

If the user has not yet installed this update, they will receive the “Mobile Device Updater” dialog box again the next time the mobile device is connected to the Mac.
