Apple plans to use a proprietary 5G modem starting in iPhone models due in 2023. This means that in a couple of years, Apple will no longer need Qualcomm’s services in this direction.
So far, Qualcomm is the supplier of 5G modems for the iPhone. The source claims that Apple will use Qualcomm’s 5G modems in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 (tentative names) due out this year and next, respectively. Starting in 2023, when Apple switches to its own 5G modems, Qualcomm will have to enter new markets and find new customers to make up for lost orders from Apple.

In March, Barclays analysts also announced that Apple will add a proprietary 5G modem to the iPhone from 2023. The first information that Apple is developing its own 5G modem appeared last year.
Apple-designed modems are expected to offer faster speeds, improved latency, and other benefits over Qualcomm or Intel modems. In 2019, Apple acquired most of Intel’s smartphone modem business. Apple said at the time that the purchase “will help accelerate the development of future products and allow Apple to differentiate further.”
