Apple sued in UK for overcharging customers for apps, compensation may exceed US$2 billion

A class-action lawsuit has been filed in London against Apple, which is accused of overcharging nearly 20 million UK customers on App Store purchases.

Apple’s standard 30 percent rate is “excessive and illegal.” Plaintiffs are demanding compensation from Apple for British iPhone and iPad users for years of excessively high fees. Apple responded that the claim was unlawful.

We view this claim as unfounded and welcome the opportunity to bring our unwavering commitment to consumers and the many benefits the App Store has brought to the UK’s innovative economy to be brought to court. The fees charged by the App Store are largely the same as those charged by other digital marketplaces. In fact, 84% of the apps on the App Store are free and developers pay nothing to Apple. And the vast majority of developers who pay Apple a commission to sell digital goods or services are eligible for a 15% commission.

The statement of claim states that all iPhone or iPad users who have purchased paid apps, subscriptions, or made other in-app purchases since October 2015 are eligible for compensation. Apple’s total compensation could exceed $ 2 billion.
